ADHD Workplace Needs Assessments: Supporting Neurodiversity in the Workplace

Creating an inclusive workplace isn’t just about meeting legal obligations—it’s about unlocking the full potential of your workforce. For employees with ADHD, small adjustments in their working environment can make a significant difference in their productivity, engagement and overall wellbeing. Offering a Workplace Needs Assessment is a proactive step towards fostering a truly inclusive culture, ensuring that neurodiverse staff have the tools and support they need to thrive.

Why Invest in a Workplace Needs Assessment?

ADHD can present unique challenges in the workplace, such as difficulties with focus, time management and organisation. However, with the right accommodations, employees with ADHD can bring incredible strengths, including creativity, problem-solving skills and high levels of energy. A Workplace Needs Assessment identifies practical adjustments that enable employees to work at their best, benefiting both the individual and the organisation.

Key Benefits for Employers:

  • Increased Productivity: Tailored accommodations help employees manage their workload effectively, reducing stress and improving efficiency.
  • Higher Retention Rates: Demonstrating commitment to inclusivity fosters loyalty and reduces staff turnover.
  • Legal Compliance: Supports compliance with the Equality Act 2010 by making reasonable adjustments for employees with ADHD.
  • Stronger Workplace Culture: A more inclusive environment enhances teamwork, morale, and overall company performance.

Types of Workplace Needs Assessment

Screening Assessment

PHL Group’s Screening Assessment follows NICE Guidelines to review individuals experiencing symptoms that might be attributable to ADHD. The assessment does not provide a diagnosis but instead advises on the likelihood of the individual having ADHD. The report provides information that can assist both Managers and external partners, such as Occupational Health, when considering recommendations for adjustments within the workplace. It can also signpost to an organisation’s EAP (Employee Assistance Programme) or any alternative service if deemed appropriate to help ensure that appropriate support is in place.

Diagnosis

PHL Group’s diagnostic assessment uses a variety of Best Practice tests that follow NICE Guidelines to determine if an individual has ADHD (A condition that is covered under the Equality Act 2010) The assessment is undertaken remotely and requires the individual to provide a background history and attend a virtual consultation.  After completing the assessments, individuals will receive a detailed written report outlining the findings, concluding whether they have ADHD. The report will also signpost appropriate support that could be available for the individual irrespective of whether the individual has been diagnosed with ADHD. PHL recognises the importance of ensuring the individual is supported whatever the outcome and will signpost initiatives that may be available through the individual’s workplace or externally to ensure an appropriate intervention is available. As with the Screening Assessment, the content of the report can help both Managers and third parties when considering workplace adjustments.

Workplace Needs Assessment vs. Occupational Health Assessment

It’s important to understand the distinction between a Workplace Needs Assessment and an Occupational Health (OH) Assessment, as they serve different purposes:

  • Occupational Health (OH) Assessment: Focuses on an employee’s overall health and fitness for work, often determining whether adjustments are needed due to medical conditions. It tends to take a broader medical view and may be requested in cases of long-term sickness absence or work-related health concerns.
  • Workplace Needs Assessment: Specifically examines how an employee’s ADHD impacts their work and identifies practical adjustments to support them in their role. It is not a medical assessment but rather a tailored evaluation of working conditions, strategies and support mechanisms.
