Embracing Neurodiversity: training for a more inclusive workplace

At PHL Group we recognise that diversity goes beyond gender, race, and culture—it also encompasses neurodiversity. Neurodiversity refers to the different ways people’s brains function and process information highlighting the unique strengths of individuals with conditions such as autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and other neurological variations.

Recently PHL Group staff took part in neurodiversity training, led by David E. Hull-Watters, an Inclusion & Wellbeing Specialist. The training offered valuable insights into the importance of embracing neurodiversity in the workplace and how we will benefit from continuing to focus on making our work environment inclusive for everyone.

Why Neurodiversity Training Matters
Neurodiversity training helps to create an inclusive and supportive workplace where all employees can flourish. By recognising and accommodating the different ways people think and work, organisations can tap into a broader talent pool, enhance creativity and fostering innovation.
Here’s why neurodiversity training is so important:

1. Understanding Differences: Training helps raise awareness about neurodivergent conditions, giving employees the tools to better understand how their colleagues experience the world. This reduces misconceptions and fosters a culture of empathy and acceptance.

2. Building an Inclusive Culture: Inclusive workplaces ensure that all employees feel valued for their unique contributions. Neurodiversity training provides managers and teams with the skills needed to support neurodivergent individuals, allowing them to thrive.

3. Boosting Productivity: Neurodivergent individuals often bring unique strengths to the table. For example, some people with autism may have exceptional attention to detail, while those with ADHD may excel in creative problem-solving. Understanding these strengths enables teams to work more effectively together and encourages out-of-the-box thinking.

4. Improving Retention: When neurodivergent employees feel supported, they are more likely to stay within the organisation and we benefit from their knowledge and skills.

At PHL Group we are committed to creating a workplace where everyone can succeed regardless of how they think or process information. Neurodiversity training is a crucial step in building an environment that values and supports all employees, ensuring we can continue to deliver outstanding care and innovation. By embracing neurodiversity we unlock the potential of our workforce and foster a culture where every individual has the opportunity to thrive.
