PHL Group operate an Integrated Urgent Care Clinical Assessment and 111 First services, providing telephone assessment to patients when their initial 111 assessment determines that they require further clinical telephone support. This service runs 24 hours a day, 7 days per week.
Our multi-disciplined team consists of Service Managers, Clinical Lead, Clinical Supervisors, Shift Managers, Shift Co-ordinators, Call Handlers, 111 Facilitators, GPs, Advanced Clinical Practitioners, Urgent Care Practitioners, Paediatric Nurses, Senior Clinical Advisors and Pharmacists.
111 First/CAS Services
In an integrated partnership with NHS 111, PHL strive to deliver our patients a positive, safe and effective experience when they are transferred into our team as part of their urgent care pathway.
We deliver this by ensuring that all calls that reach our team are effectively prioritised and directed where appropriate to receive the right treatment by the right clinician in the most suited healthcare setting.
Our IUC CAS receives referrals from NHS 111 along with calls from Health Care Professionals seeking additional clinical telephone advice for patients being attended in their place of residence. PHL offers a skill mixed model in our IUC CAS with a wide range of experienced clinicians.
The 111 First service was introduced during the first wave of the Covid-19 pandemic to support Emergency Departments and Ambulance services.
Patients that receive an ED disposition following initial 111 pathways assessment are passed through to PHL for a GP to review and validate if there is a more suitable alternative.
Paediatric Desk
Our contact centre also delivers a standalone Paediatric Clinical Assessment Service, which runs between 10:00 and 22:00, 7 days a week and is led by the clinical management team.
Our Paediatric desk plays an important role in reducing ED admissions. Staffed by a dedicated team of qualified paediatric nurses, they review any case which would fall within PHL’s Clinical Assessment Service for children under the age of 18.

We use an incredible piece of technology called GoodSAM to support our Paediatric Clinical Assessment Service. With GoodSAM, our paediatric team can text a link to the caller, which will initiate a 1-way video call. Our qualified paediatric nurses use the 1-way video call to get an instant opinion on the patient’s health, whether they are experiencing sickness, or have an injury.

Reducing Emergency Department Admissions
PHL works in partnership with South Central Ambulance Service 111 to help patients receive the right treatment, by the right clinician, in the most suitable healthcare setting. The 111 First service was introduced during the first wave of the Covid-19 pandemic to support emergency departments (EDs) and Ambulance services.
